We’re told from a young age to conquer our fears. It’s always easier said than done especially if you have to overcome a huge obstacle.
Vivian Stancil did just that.
Vivian’s an incredibly inspiring woman. Although blind, she has never felt sorry for herself, but, rather, tried to live life on her terms. However, her doctor warned Vivian that she needed to lose weight or she might die (and that being blind was no excuse). To do this, in addition to physically putting in the work, she had a huge mental challenge that she needed to overcome. That was learning how to swim.
Her problem was that in addition to being blind Vivian was afraid of water. She had “heard” that “blind people can’t swim.” With Vivian’s determination that was all that she needed to hear.
Standing on the edge of the pool for the first time (at age 49) she was petrified. Her coach said, “Vivian, jump in! You’ve already been baptized.” Vivian responded, “Not like this.” Gathering her courage, Vivian said to herself, “Why Not Now,” and took a leap of faith and the rest is history.
From that small step, Vivian’s gone on to win 221 medals (and counting) at the Senior Olympic Games. She has tons more energy, started a Foundation that gives free swimming lessons, and is now a City Commissioner for people with disabilities.
Incredible!!
