One man’s trash is another person’s treasure. This is certainly the case with visionary architect Ricardo Bofill.
In 1973, Ricardo Bofill discovered a dilapidated cement factory near Barcelona. As a seasoned architect, he had a vision of how it could be transformed into a unique and one-of-a-kind home.
The possibilities were endless.
So, Ricardo took a leap of faith and purchased the old World War I era cement factory. As such, LA FÃBRICA, as it became known, was born.
As Ricardo expected, much of the Spanish cement factory needed repair and renovation. It virtually sat unused and unkempt for over 40 years prior to his purchase.
Fast forward to today, and Ricardo’s transformed LA FÃBRICA from a drab concrete structure into a landmark home with immense character and appeal.
It’s taken years of vision, planning, and construction to create lush green areas and vegetation where chimneys once spewed huge pollution swaths and modern livable space complete with furnishing, chimneys, and modern technology. Also, given the huge amount of space, Ricardo’s created numerous unique work areas for his team.
Even almost 45 years later LA FÃBRICA’s not finished. According to Ricardo, because of its vast size (and his continual expanding architectural vision), there’s always work to be done and LA FÃBRICA will be a continual work-in-progress.
I think it’s incredible now!
